The Benefits of RAP and Milling
In any paving project, improving efficiency and cutting costs is key. Utilizing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can help you complete your project on time and under budget.
The Value of RAP
RAP can be processed and used to replace virgin aggregate and liquid asphalt. Recycled aggregate and liquid AC will have the same value as the virgin material they replace if the RAP is processed into the same size and shape as the original. Additionally, the rock in recycle is the same age as rock coming from a quarry, and liquid asphalt in recycle is the same age as that fresh from an oil well.
Because RAP can function identically to virgin materials if processed correctly, it provides considerable cost savings, especially as the cost of virgin materials rises.
RAP can be acquired in one of two ways: either by breaking and ripping the pavement from a road that needs to be repaired or through milling. Milling produces the largest quantity of RAP and is the preferred method of obtaining it because it keeps material of differing qualities separate and improves the surface smoothness of the milled pavement.
Milling offers several additional benefits, including:
- Eliminating changes in bridge clearances
- Keeping weight limits on bridges constant
- Reestablishing drainage on project sites to improve water run-off
- Preserving the elevation of existing utilities on a project site
- Correcting rutting if the original surface is milled to the bottom of the ruts
- Making inlay pavements superior to overlay pavements
Milling machines were first introduced in the 1970s. In recent years, improvements in the construction and mounting of milling teeth, as well as horsepower have led to decreased costs on projects.
Roadtec Milling Machines
Roadtec’s line of milling machines and cold planers includes a variety of features designed to help you save time and money on your next project. In addition to the standard benefits of milling machines, Roadtec equipment includes:
- Bolt-on track pads
- Two independent spray bars
- Three- and four-track configurations
- 60-degree conveyor swings
- Folding secondary conveyors
Roadtec’s RX-900e/ex cold planer is equipped for half- or full-lane milling. It is also, along with the RX-700e/ex, available with a bolt-on package that readies it for cold in place recycling projects. Roadtec’s RT-500 can be paired with the RX-900 to create a cold in place recycling machine, or it can work alone as its own mix plant to more efficiently process RAP.
