Asphalt recycling is an environmentally friendly paving process that provides considerable cost savings over traditional mill-and-fill methods.

At Roadtec, our RX-700e/ex and RX-900e/ex milling machines are available with bolt-on packages that equip them for cold in-place recycling projects. With bi-directional functionality, these machines can easily down cut for better material sizing.

Providing the ultimate in versatility, the RT-500 can be paired with our RX-900 to create a cold in-place recycling machine, or it can function on its own as a cold-central mix plant, allowing for more efficient processing of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).

What Is Cold In Place Recycling (CIR) and what are its benefits?

Cold in-place recycling (CIR) is a paving process where instead of applying all new Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), you treat remove and treat the existing asphalt with bituminous and/or chemical additives and then use it to pave the road. It normally involves a recycling train consisting of recycling agent tankers, a milling machine,  an asphalt paver and a combination of compaction equipment.

The milling machine grinds off the top 2 to 5 inches of asphalt and mixes it with an asphalt recycling agent from the tanker. Then the paver lays the mixture back down onto the surface followed by the rollers for compaction. The process usually occurs at a temperature of 100 degrees to 120 degrees, which in asphalt paving is considered "cold." The benefits of cold in-place recycling are it is generally more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and lasts longer than traditional paving processes.
